Edwin Dartey is a dual-title PhD candidate in Applied Linguistics and African Studies. His research interests include language policy and planning, multilingualism, language ideologies, decolonial, and Southern epistemologies.
Edwin’s dissertation explores how societal factors such as power, class, coloniality, and indigenous knowledge systems impact language practices and educational outcomes in Ghanaian schools. The project proposes alternative ways of re-envisioning educational language policies in Ghana because, despite students’ proficiency in multiple languages, educational policies prioritize monolingual English instruction, neglecting the home languages of students. The prioritization hampers students’ transition to English, hindering academic success and workforce readiness. Edwin’s research sheds light on the critical role language plays in education in developing countries like Ghana.
